Mouth Screening Clinic

We accept referrals only from Dentists and Physicians.

The mouth-screening clinic is for patients with oral lesions, such as ulcers, lumps, bumps, red patches, or white patches in the mouth. These areas will be assssed by an Oral Pathologist – Dr. K. Burgess. Some oral conditions can be diagnosed by their clinical appearance. Other oral lesions need to be biopsied. This means a small piece is taken from the lesion and examined under the microscope to determine the diagnosis.

Patients are referred to the Mouth Screening Clinic by a fax from their dentist or physician. The referral formreferral form can be downloaded. A fully completed form can be faxed to 416-946-6576. The PMH dental receptionist will call the dentist office with an appointment. For more information call 416-946-2198. A Patient Information sheet and directions can be printed and given to each patient.

The first appointment is usually a specific exam (ODA code 01204).

Dr. Karen Burgess, DDS. MSc, FRCDC is a certified specialist in oral medicine and pathologist. She is an assistant professor at the Faulty of Dentistry and teaches undergraduate and postgraduate students.
